Pollution here could mean death elsewhere!

While it’s true that pollution kills, it certainly knows no boundaries... Pollution here could mean death elsewhere!

The journal Atmospheric Environment suggests that dust plume from the deserts of Africa and a fog of pollution from Europe converge over the Indian subcontinent, condemning roughly 2,00,000 people to early deaths. The exhaust from diesel engines and emissions from various factories add to this insidious imported cocktail.

Researchers, environmentalists and scientists are working in tandem in order to tackle this looming hazard. But as far as the solution to this problem is concerned, researchers and scientists are finding ways to get insights into these toxic pollutants travelling in the air, and the environmentalists are busy devising ways by which nature could absorb the harmful effects of pollution in totality. More than these specialists, it is our effort which would change the course of this air-borne hazard. With concerted effort from each one of us, we could devise ways to curtail this problem or at least not add to it. Simran Kaur, who works 30 kms away from her house in Delhi, says, “I switched to an eco-friendly fuel which is CNG, and I always try for a car-pool while going to office or even while partying with friends. I feel that each one of us can make a difference by whatever little we do for our environment and for ourselves. Our first step could be to avoid littering and saying ‘NO’ to polythene bags, because pollution of all sorts is bad.”

Clearly, the future lies in people of the world uniting and for governments the world over, adhering to and adopting initiatives like the Kyoto Protocol.
