Can Shoppers Stop do it?

Can Shoppers Stop do it? Does Shoppers Stop have it within them to fight the slowdown and one day become India’s answer to WalMart? angshuman paul investigates...

‘First movers create the market but it’s not necessary that they sustain the first mover’s advantage. You can enter late but simultaneously, you can cash in on the market created by the first movers.’ That’s what Sam Walton, the god of retail, always touted; and his first WalMart store (then named Walton’s 5&10, which he opened in Bentonville in 1950 on borrowed money and savings from a stint in the army), wasn’t even actually USA’s first discount department store. In fact, it wasn’t even his first – Walton had to actually sell off his first store in Newport because of the lease running out. Neither was Walton the pioneer in the industry, nor was he one of the best, but what he surely knew, was that no success is worthwhile if the same is not attached with a world beating vision. From just one store to making Walmart the world’s largest and number one on the Fortune 500 list, there’s surely much to learn from Sam, and vision tops the bill.

Is B.S.Nagesh India’s answer to Sam? In his vision to revolutionise retail buying, surely yes. In his vision for making Shoppers Stop a world standard, perhaps not. That brings us to the next question. Is Shoppers Stop India’s answer to WalMart? Not yet; and strangely, mostly because of reasons that seem to be beyond their control (or are they?). And that’s where the pain starts; of being Shoppers Stop, of being B.S.Nagesh, of operating in an industry and environment that can only support you this much, of being enmeshed in a vision that is entrapped within not only the limits of the sector’s operations, but also of the vision of the government.

Despite my evident undercurrent of the critic’s clarinet, I accept that Nagesh (and even Shoppers Stop for that matter) is the best that could have happened to India in a century of retailing. Well, at least until the past year (I’ll come to that later). There can be no better logic that justifies this status than the manner in which a single man and a brand jumpstarted the view of India to retail.

Who’ll call warren’s bluff?

The last time I tried to meet up with Buffett to convince him I could be the one, I was stopped at the New Delhi airport itself (alright, I’m lying; I couldn’t even afford the air ticket). But think about it; we’ve all been had. A handful of months back, when we ran Warren’s (and his son’s) exclusive interview in B&E, we had forecasted bang on that Ajit Jain (Berkshire Hathaway’s Reinsurance Business Head) was amongst the nine probable candidates who could be successors to Warren Buffett. And we’d regimentally recommended to dear Warren that he should give up his position sooner than later. Oh, how dumb could we have been...

“I did some dumb things in investments. I made at least one major mistake of commission and several lesser ones that also hurt... Furthermore, I made some errors of omission, sucking my thumb when new facts came-in that should have caused me to re-examine my thinking and promptly take action...” Thumb sucking adjectives aside, these are the actual words of confession from Warren Buffett in his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders (Purely due to ethical journalistic policies, I have not bought Berkshire’s shares; one share cost Rs.60,00,000 last year; they say it’s down this year).

But what left me sucking my thumb (sorry Warren, if you can use it, then this is a global usage now) was his one announcement in the above mentioned letter to his shareholders (where he also made the confession written before) where Buffett overtly praises Ajit and paints a picture that most definitely points towards Ajit donning the top hat at Berkshire. In his own words, “There is no one like him and his business is never the same. Ajit came to Berkshire in 1986. Very quickly, I realised that we had acquired an extraordinary talent. So I did the logical thing: I wrote [to] his parents in New Delhi and asked if they had another one like him at home. Of course, I knew the answer before writing. There isn’t anyone like Ajit...” And guess what, it is Buffett’s custom to call up Ajit Jain every evening to discuss ‘business matters’. I never could imagine that I’d live to see the day when Warren would be doodling over a guy. Has Warren finally fallen in love? Well, despite my unfathomable bubbling eagerness to say yes, the answer is a clear no. This is Warren at his impressive bluff best.

Wrong medicine

Sending more troops not enough

Obama has recently announced that he will send additional NATO troops to Afghanistan to stabilize the situation. However, troops cannot solve the larger issues faced by Afghanistan.

The major stumbling block is corruption, where the enemy is ironically far better placed. To fight corruption in its ranks, the Taliban has set up its own anti-corruption committees in 33 provinces. It also runs its own courts, which are known for quick justice without the need to pay bribes. The US is trying to win over mid-level Taliban commanders with lucrative job offers and offering them good money, which is, to a large extent, not working! In comparison, the Afghan military is hopelessly incompetent, ill-equipped and highly corrupt. Afghanistan supplies over 90% of the world’s opium and heroin, which brings in billions in revenue each year. So much so that even the US Drug Enforcement Administration reports, “Heroin is more valuable than oil. Example: A ton of crude oil costs less than $290 - but a ton of heroin cost $67 million in Europe; and a ton of heroin in New York cost between $300-$900 million.” The warlords of the region are facilitating the whole trade.

President Hamid Karzai has stressed on ending “the culture of impunity and violations of law.” Opposition leader Dr.Abdullah has blamed overseas interests for the malaise, as he comments, “For that sort of corruption, it’s the international community that also shares responsibility with us.” To contend with the growing Talibanism in 2001, the US had turned to these warlords for help. Even today, NATO still has to rely on some of them for security in the provinces. According to American officers in Afghanistan, tribals will gladly take money and assure the eradication of insurgents without taking up arms. But the resulting corruption is going to stand in the way of all attempts to bring long term stability to Afghanistan. If Obama is serious about saving Afghanistan, he needs to tackle this parallel economy at the earliest.

That’s what made all the difference

B&E’s Pallavi Srivastava catches up with management graduates who looked beyond the traditional corporate career and took up non-conventional jobs... and that’s what made all the difference!

Unlike Sarath – who found his calling relatively late – actress Manjari Phadnis knew very well from the beginning that a corporate career is not what her true calling is. Manjari is currently pursuing an MBA from the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM). As an actress, she got a lot of accolades for her role as ‘Meghna’ in Imran Khan’s debut movie Jaane Tu Yaa Jane Na! The pretty lass started her career as an actress when she was just out of school. Her first movie was Planman Motion Pictures’ Rok Sako To Rok Lo. She has also starred in Anjan Dutta’s critically acclaimed National Award winning movie Faltu. “Acting has always been my first priority, but I have always made it a point to complete my formal education alongside. MBA is something that I am doing because I really enjoy it. Also, being an MBA teaches you how to deal with people well,” says Manjari. The actress strongly feels that the entertainment industry is where she belongs and that is her true calling. Her MBA, however, will help her to be a better manager and a better marketer which nevertheless will be an added advantage in the tinsel town. “On the screen or behind the scenes, entertainment industry is where I belong and that is what I will keep doing,” she concludes.

So while entertainment is Manjari’s true calling, 27-year-old Kaushalendra Kumar has his heart set on working for the upliftment of the farmers of Bihar. After completing his MBA, Kaushalendra is at present running an NGO, Kaushalya Foundation, that focuses on mobilising and organising the informal and fragmented vegetable sector of Bihar. And Kaushalendra is not alone in this cause. His friend O. P. Singh, who is also an MBA from IIM Ahemdabad, shares the vision of making Bihar the vegetable hub of the nation – the common motive for the two to start Kaushalya Foundation.

Coming from a farmer’s family from a village in Nalanda district of Bihar, Kaushalendra Kumar is very well familiar with the predicaments that a farmer faces in Bihar. He accepts, “I belong to a farmer family in Bihar. I have seen their troubles and also opportunities they missed out on because they were not guided.”

Ethical fashion...

Here’s the latest brewing in ethical fashion...

When our cloth is dyed naturally using plants, no heavy metals are used as other natural fixing agents are employed and the water can be directly used to irrigate the crops without the need for any treatment. I knew that it was possible to purchase Fair-trade cotton in India. I also found that only in India could I find “natural dyeing” on a commercial scale. The cotton is grown in Madhya Pradesh (Mahima Organics) and it is dyed in Ahmedabad,” says Susan.

Varun Gupta was one of the six Indian designers who collaborated with six British designers for Shared Talent India, funded by The Centre for Sustainable Fashion, DEFRA, and their designs showcasing sustainable Indian textiles were shown at the Monsoon stand at Estethica at the London Fashion Week held last month. Says Varun, “We invited a lot of suppliers from India including Aura Herbal Textiles, which is into herbal dyeing. Then there was Pushpanjali, a fair-trade company which is into fair trade-cottons, jerseys, khadi etc. We also had Zameen, which is into organic cotton.

We’re promoting handloom and peace silk.”

Whether the interest in sustainable fashion is only a passing fad, or a precursor to the way forward, the innovations in ethical fashion definitely make for many an interesting coffee or tea time conversation!

Pollution here could mean death elsewhere!

While it’s true that pollution kills, it certainly knows no boundaries... Pollution here could mean death elsewhere!

The journal Atmospheric Environment suggests that dust plume from the deserts of Africa and a fog of pollution from Europe converge over the Indian subcontinent, condemning roughly 2,00,000 people to early deaths. The exhaust from diesel engines and emissions from various factories add to this insidious imported cocktail.

Researchers, environmentalists and scientists are working in tandem in order to tackle this looming hazard. But as far as the solution to this problem is concerned, researchers and scientists are finding ways to get insights into these toxic pollutants travelling in the air, and the environmentalists are busy devising ways by which nature could absorb the harmful effects of pollution in totality. More than these specialists, it is our effort which would change the course of this air-borne hazard. With concerted effort from each one of us, we could devise ways to curtail this problem or at least not add to it. Simran Kaur, who works 30 kms away from her house in Delhi, says, “I switched to an eco-friendly fuel which is CNG, and I always try for a car-pool while going to office or even while partying with friends. I feel that each one of us can make a difference by whatever little we do for our environment and for ourselves. Our first step could be to avoid littering and saying ‘NO’ to polythene bags, because pollution of all sorts is bad.”

Clearly, the future lies in people of the world uniting and for governments the world over, adhering to and adopting initiatives like the Kyoto Protocol.

Why one bird in hand is better!

k. m. birla is at a crossroads – to combine or not to combine is the question. neha saraiya states the raison d’être behind the best possible option...

Imagine a young CEO, who happily acquires a 51% stake in L&T’s cement division (named as Ultratech) for a whopping Rs.22 billion and then soon after sends a letter to his board of management warning them about the bumpy road ahead... That is Kumara Mangalam Birla, a man who had apprehensions about the problems that the massive year-2004 acquisition would cause to the company in the long run. Even as many woke up with the hangover from that deal, there was another major announcement from Grasim Industries on June 11, 2009 – a further purchase of 11.5% stake in L&T Cement! Surprisingly, all went well and in fact much better than expected... That was five years back.

It’s 2009, and the 42 year-old Birla is faced with another question – should he combine his brainchild Grasim Cement with the foster child Ultratech? The move to merge the entities will definitely make the duo, the largest player in India’s cement industry, with an annual combined production capacity of 42 million tonnes, overtaking others in its ilk, which includes biggies like ACC, Gujrat Ambuja, et al. But what if structural issues actually creep into this process of consolidation? Before answering that, taking a look at the company’s performance during FY2008-09 becomes important. The company which has a host of businesses under its umbrella (including Viscose Staple Fabric – VSF, cement, chemicals, textiles, iron ore, et al) recorded a net profit of Rs.21.87 billion, with top line collections of Rs.18.04 billion.

So, while the bottom line fell by 5% as compared to the previous year, what makes Birla happy is the fact that revenues of his main cement business grew by a double-digit 13% y-o-y, touching 20 million tonnes in capacity. Of course, the infrastructure development thrust given by the Indian government helped, but the question stands – are the other eggs in his basket worrying Birla? Admits Adesh Gupta, Group Exec. President and CFO, Grasim Industries in an exclusive conversation with B&E, “Despite higher energy cost and the economic slowdown, cement business maintained its operating profit in FY’09. However, our VSF business was adversely impacted by the global slowdown and spiralling input costs.” Rightly so, the VSF and sponge iron businesses have proved laggards for the company, as the average VSF realisations fell by as much as 17% y-o-y, while sponge iron’s fell by 30% y-o-y. The major reason for this dip has been reduced consumer spending & increase in raw material costs.

OBAMA: RACIAL PROFILING

Obama’s concern over his remarks & speeches came true...

Talking about health, blacks experience disproportionate burden of health diseases, injury and death. Researches show that in 2002, non-Hispanic blacks who died from HIV were approximately 11 times as many age-adjusted years of potential life lost before age 75 years per 100,000 population as non-Hispanic whites. National Urban League’s 2006 annual report revealed that out of 5,80,000 black who are serving sentence in prison, mere 40,000 males complete a bachelor’s degree. Nearly 70% blacks in prison never completed their schooling. Likewise in a 1994 Department of Justice survey of felony, it was found that blacks were more likely to receive prison sentences than whites. As per federal death penalty data released by the Department of Justice between 1995-2000, out of those 682 defendants (for death penalty), the defendants were black in 48% of the cases, Hispanic in 29% of the cases, and white in only 20% of the cases. Following the trend, a study by Wake County, North Carolina found that African Americans had bail set 18% higher than whites charged with similar crimes.

Even in terms of earnings, researches show that in 1964, African Americans’ income was 58% of white people’s income. In 1991, African Americans’ income was just 57% of Whites’ income. Moreover, there is sheer discrimination at the top level in the US army as well. As per the recent data, while 62.7% are Whites in the US army, blacks consist of around 20%. But in the commissioned officer level, merely 12.4% Blacks are holding positions while 73% are occupied by whites. More strikingly, racism was witnessed in America more clearly during the 2008 presidential election. Obama won the support of 95% black voters. When it came to white voters, 43% voted for him while 55% voted for McCain.

ELECTION BUDGET

You will find no number crunching, no jargon and no guru speak from so called Dalal Street mavens on the Budget. sutanu guru & pramod kumar bring you the real budget story – a story of the lead up to the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.

Days after the Congress-led UPA won that famous victory that left die hard pundits gasping for breath and excuses, some people were quietly and furiously busy in one house at Gurudwara Rakabganj Road and two houses in South Avenue in Delhi. Many of you must have read about how that non-descript residence in Rakabganj Road was actually the war room of Rahul Gandhi; most of you may not be aware that the house was ‘loaned’ by the owner of one of the biggest media houses of the country. The foundations for the Union Budget 2009-10 that was presented by Pranab Mukherjee were being laid by these mostly low profile characters who passionately believe that Rahul Gandhi must, and will, become the Prime Minister of India by 2014. Do remember: Pranab Mukherjee was yet to be ‘officially’ announced as the Finance Minister at that time.

Soon after the Cabinet was formed, it met formally to vet the address of President Pratibha Patil to the Joint session of Parliament. This meeting itself, more or less finalised the broad contours of the forthcoming budget. One key decision taken during this meeting was to abolish the controversial and widely criticized fringe benefit tax. Some of you who do recall the ‘routine’ and ‘yawn inducing’ speech of the President in the first week of June will not be surprised at all by the speech that Pranab Mukherjee finally delivered on July 6. In fact, even as the Finance Minister was busy meeting industrialists, industry lobby bodies and representatives of trade unions, farmers and many other self appointed guardians of public well being, he always found time to meet and discuss the broad agenda of the forthcoming budget with the other members of the core committee of Congress. This core committee includes Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Pranab Mukherjee, P. Chidambaram and Ahmed Patel. In addition, informal channels with Rahul Gandhi’s team of close advisors were always open.

India has you as our Prime Minister

Mr. Prime Minister, congratulations! We, the 456 million paupers (living below the miserable poverty line, for information), feel delighted that 62 years after Independence, India has you as our Prime Minister, for a second term...

So what should the actual parameter be for deciding who in God’s name is below the poverty line? Angela Gibson-Kierstead, Chief Economist, the Canadian Council on Social Development, spoke to us, “As far as the calorie-intake method is concern, it is so adrift of people’s own perception of poverty, which is more based on asset ownership. Imagine a ‘not poor’ person who has had his quota of calories but still doesn’t have a roof on his head...” William R. Cline, Senior economist, Center for Global Development, commented, “There cannot be a single approach to calculate poverty threshold. For example, the $2 limit might work properly in a developing society but fails miserably in developed countries. Similarly, in North Africa and West Asia, the calorie calculation method falls flat because of eating habits...”

Not that the government is blind to the per capita income format. The National Commission for Enterprises in Unorganised Sector, commissoned by the UPA government – with Arjun Sengupta as Chairman – had presented its findings on poverty to our Prime Minister Mr.Manmohan Singh just a handful of years back. The two major findings were not that dissimilar to the World Bank report:
(a) Over 395 million workers (more than 85% of the working population and 78% of the unorganised workforce) live at an income that is Rs. 20 of less a day.
(b) 88% of SCs and STs, 80% of OBCs and 85% of Muslims belong to the “poor and vulnerable” category, again earning less than Rs. 20 a day. And these figures represent current times. In 1990, China had more than 60% of its population living below the poverty line. In 2015, this figure will be below 6%, as per World Bank estimates. There obviously is something that the supremely dictatorial China is doing that our brilliantly intellectual and pathetically democratic MPs and PMs seem to be not doing, and that too despite poverty ostensibly being the number one policy issue for every government since Independence till date.
