Politics seems to flow through their veins
Karunanidhi never tried to separate his family from the party. He quotes instances from Mao’s & Lenin’s life to justify his family’s presence in politics. He says the Dravidian movement too, is like a family, where scores of volunteers participate along with their family members & his family is no different.
His younger son M. K. Stalin, the rural development & internal administration minister in Tamil Nadu Government has been projected as his political heir. Like his father, Stalin is active in politics from the age of 14. He was incarcerated for one-year during Emergency in 1976 and was awarded a party ticket only in 1989 to contest Assembly elections. He was awarded a ministerial berth during his fourth term in the Assembly. Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year. But more than anyone else, Karunanidhi used to rely on his nephew Murasoli Maran after whose death his son Dayanidhi Maran was made the powerful Union Minister of Communications.
